Lhamour yak down blankets are made from 100% Mongolian yak down. Our blankets are 200 centimeters long and 145 centimeters wide making them perfect as a couch throw or a luxurious bed blanket. Each blanket comes beautifully wrapped in a Lhamour kraft gift box.
Yaks are native to Mongolia and have adapted to the extremely cold conditions with their long hair fibers and thick skin. Yaks produce 3 different layers of hair fiber: the outer layer (referred to as the coarse), the middle layer (or the mid-type) and the down fiber (the most inner layer). The outer layer is extremely rough and mostly used by nomads to make their gers (Mongolian tents). The middle layer is not as strong as the outer layer but is also used to make gers in addition to rope for herding. The down fiber is the soft and warm and we use this fiber make our blankets.
During the spring molting season, we work closely with a handful of Mongolian herders who carefully comb each yak by hand. This only occurs once a year for 4-6 weeks during the spring season when the yaks naturally shed. Once the hair has been combed, it goes through various processing stages: sorting, scouring, dehairing, spinning and then weaving. We use only the finest inner layer from this process to produce our yak down blankets.
Yak down is comparable to cashmere in softness, warmth and weight and we recommend that all blankets are dry-cleanable only. Each batch of blankets we make are uniquely special, no chemicals or bleach have been used and we have maintained the natural colour of the yak fibers. Due to the limited amount of yaks and scarcity of supplies, only limited amounts of yak down blankets are made each year.
We hope you enjoy our blankets as much as we love making them!
